My Billiard Cue Repair Shop

As I have indicated elsewhere on this web site, I specialize in vintage and antique cue restorations. The only, so to speak, modern billiard cues that I also restore are Willie Hoppe cues.

I am in my own little world when I am in my shop working on billiard cues and listening to the television. Certainly my shop is not on the scale of the many great cue makers around the country who have multiple lathes, CNC machines, finishing rooms and so on. I have however invested thousands of dollars in equipment and training -- all of which is sufficient to restore most any vintage cue that you might send me.

I had used my Jet lathe for many years when my primary focus was on antique furniture restoration projects. My first dedicated cue lathe was a Cue Companion made by Unique products, uniqueinc.com. The lathe and the videos that I purchased from Unique Products were of great help as I started repairing cues. Don’t miss the leather wrap video. If you are considering repairing cues at home, I would certainly recommend this lathe.

As I advanced in my capabilities, I wanted to find a lathe that could do a bit more, particularly when it came to working on one piece antique cues. I settled on a Chris Hightower “Deluxe Cue Smith™”. If interested here is where to look, cuesmith.com. Chris is always available if you have questions regarding your lathe or making cues. The lathe is very well made and I suspect it can do most everything a cue maker would ask of it. The thing I like most is that the Deluxe Cue Smith lathe has a bed extension to the left of the work station. That feature is very important to me as many of the antique cues I restore are one-piece parlor cues. (See the bed extension holding a one-piece cue in the second picture below.) It is difficult to spin a one-piece cue at high speed when installing a new ivory ferrule and tip if you have no way to hold the butt of the cue some 50” away from the chuck.

I have found that both lathes are useful in different ways. For example, the Cue Companion works best for me when doing twine or silk wraps and as well it is great for holding a cue when doing a leather wrap. I am not sure I could do a twine or linen wrap if I did not have the variable speed, forward and reverse feature that the Cue Companion lathe offers.

ENJOY YOUR TOUR. PLEASE GET IN TOUCH IF YOU HAVE A SPECIAL VINTAGE CUE YOU WISH TO HAVE RESTORED.
